A patent troll has reportedly filed a complaint accusing iPhone maker Apple Inc. of intellectual property infringement for using various technologies, including one of the company's own patents, to make the iPhone.
A complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., and first reported by Bloomberg, was filed by patent-holding company TransPerfect Corp.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the complaint was filed in June on behalf of TransPerfect, a U.S.-based patent holding company that owns patents covering a variety of business methods.
The technology the company accuses Apple of infringing includes "the use of a biometric input in combination with a plurality of secured access rules to control access to electronic resources or products that are under the ownership and control of the person," according to the report, citing the complaint.
Specifically, the complaint targets Apple's "Password Assistant for iCloud Keychain" feature, which is included with iOS 7.1.1 and later. This feature uses the fingerprint scanner on the iPhone 5s and later to verify users and store fingerprints for subsequent use.
However, TransPerfect claims that the technology it asserts is patented was developed by the company in 2006, according to the report. The complaint was filed in June, after a report from the WSJ suggested that the company was waiting for the final version of iOS 7.1.1 to be released to act on the case.
The WSJ report also said that Apple is being targeted by companies that might have been trying to gain competitive advantage by using patents to force other firms to pay licensing fees for using technologies that have already been patented.
